Situation:

In response to the Board's inquiry, Strategy & Decision Support was asked to convene a working group to provide a comprehensive update on the evolution of UBC’s faculty, staff, and student complement across both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses spanning from the academic year 2018/19 to 2022/23. The report provided a holistic overview of the workforce and academic landscape at UBC.

Our Actions:

  • To address the Board's request, a collaborative effort was initiated by Strategy & Decision Support, involving key campus partners from Human Resources, Planning and Institutional Research (PAIR), Finance, and the Okanagan campus.
  • The team meticulously gathered and validated data pertaining to faculty, staff, and student populations across the specified period.
  • The narrative development of the report involved synthesizing this data into a comprehensive and coherent story that reflects the evolution and trends within the University.
  • Regular consultations were held with Executives / senior leadership to ensure alignment with institutional goals and accuracy in data representation.

Results:

  • The finalized report was presented at the Board committee meeting. The comprehensive nature of the report, coupled with clear narrative development, allowed the Board members to gain valuable insights into the growth patterns, strategic initiatives, and resource allocation related to the faculty, staff, and student complement across both campuses.
  • The report was well received, providing the Board members with the necessary information to make informed decisions regarding the University's future directions and resource planning.
